Head Coach and President of Beaver Boxing Club (BBC) in Ottawa
Started boxing at BBC in 1946 at the age of 14; 2 years later Joe was a Canadian Champion and represented Canada in the 1948 Olympics in London England
At 16 years old, Joe is still the youngest Canadian boxer ever to compete in the Olympics
A self-described “112lbs of dynamite” his amateur record was 70 wins in 75 bouts
In the early 1950’s Joe began coaching and managing boxers at BBC, he has also coached and managed the Canadian National Boxing Team as well as professional boxers
Joe is an icon in the Canadian boxing scene and has been inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame
Joe’s contribution to WBK
Joe put Chris through his first workout at BBC in March 1993 and automatically hooked him on the “sweet science”. He converted Chris from the trenches of the gridiron (football field) to a warrior of the squared circle (the ring). Joe coached and managed Chris’s brief amateur career (1993-1998)
BBC became a sanctuary for Chris during humbling setbacks; in 1993 with professional football; Canadian Football League (CFL) and in 1995 with the bankruptcy of his restaurant; Whitebrook: Your Healthy Eatery
The intense workouts and no nonsense ‘old school’ atmosphere at BBC enabled Chris to free his mind and uplift his spirit and recapture his ‘fighting spirit’
Joe and BBC helped turn Chris around during some of the darkest and most stressful periods of his life, instilling his deeply held conviction of WBK’s “Boxing For Better Living”
